Barrick Lumwana Mining Company Ltd (LMC), a copper mining company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the North Western region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km south west of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Technical Advisor (Drill & Blast)

Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Drill & Blast Superintendent, you will be responsible for providing technical support, leadership, coaching and supervision for the operation across all drill and blast activities
  • Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
  • Focus on the cost efficient use of all drilling consumables i.e. drill bits, drill rods, hammers and other drilling accessories
  • Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all personnel including contractors working within the mining area during shift
  • Effective utilization of the drill equipment
  • Understand drill and blast cost targets in conjunction with the daily, weekly and monthly mining plans that correspond with the yearly production target
  • Control the allocation of the drill rigs according to the mine plan/priorities
  • Recommend improvements to safe operating procedures
  • Interpreting the daily weekly planned targets to the Drill & Blast Crew
  • Implement and coordinate the schedule of the MMU truck and blasting equipment
  • Accountable for ensuring supervisors are adequately advised and supported with information to enable the immediate work area to be managed appropriately in accordance with the governing statutory requirements
  • Monitor availability and utilisation of the drill and blast equipment
  • Provide data and information in accordance with the Management Operating System and short interval control system
  • Foster cooperative relationships to maximise availability and reliability of drill rigs and minimise drill and blast costs
  • Proactively support continuous improvement measures to deliver clear efficiency and cost benefit.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Mining Engineering
    Eight (8) years’ experience in the open pit mining industry – Drill & Blast with 5 years or more in a supervisory role
  • Experience in large multi pit operations utilizing large scale mining equipment i.e. drill rigs and blasting experience essential
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and implement drilling plans and ensure quality control is maintained throughout the drilling process
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English language
  • Competent in incident/accident investigation
  • Good working knowledge of the Mines Regulations
  • Zambian Nationals who meet requirements for this position and are resident in Zambia are strongly encouraged to apply
