Fig Tree Café: Travel break
The Great North Road is part of the Cape to Cairo Road envisioned by Cecil Rhodes. It is a major route in Zambia, running north from Zambia's border with Zimbabwe at Chirundu through to Lusaka, Kabwe, Kapiri Mposhi, Serenje, Mpika, Isoka and on to Tunduma in Tanzania. Kabwe is small town so this is a welcome break just before the town. You can see the Fig Tree Café on the left from the road. There's a small slip road so don't miss it! The menu includes full English breakfast, toasted cheese and tomato, chicken mayo, ham and tomato, egg and bacon, burgers and there is always a selection of cakes and milk shakes (coffee, strawberry, vanilla, chocolate or banana). The helpings here are generous and the food, made from locally grown fresh produce is delicious!
And then there's the coffee - something Fig Tree Café are very proud of. Only the best Zambian coffee that is freshly ground and filtered is used to make the richest of cappuccino, cape mocha, latté and iced coffee. This is perfect coffee made by experts. The Fig Tree also provides a good selection of quality local produce from the Kabwe farming community such as home made jams, honey, a selection of cheeses, Fringilla sausages as well as sun dried fruit including tomato, guava, mango, banana. The original art work in the dining room is for sale too, as are a range of creatively hand made crafts.
Run by the entertaining and friendly brother and sister duo, Anton Staal and Bianca Hart you'll get more than just a plate of food here. The clue is in the fact that regulars can give the staff a call putting in an order 20 minutes before arrival to find it waiting for you, piping hot! The dining room is inviting, clean, well lit and tastefully furnished. Or you can eat opt to eat outside in the sunshine on benches or the green lawn.
