Zambia’s attractions highlighted by Akwasu
A spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe. Described by the indiginous Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800’s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ meaning ‘the smoke that thunders’.
The Kalambo Rivere ceases to flow on the high plateau and plunges over the side of the Great Rift Valley in one vertical drop of about 221m. This is the second highest waterfall in Africa, about double the height of the Victoria Falls, and the 12th highest in the world.
Made up of the main falls, Kaela Rapids, and Mutumuna Falls the main falls drops about 15-20m in a thick gushing leap. The Kaela Rapids is a long series of short cascades with an attractive 5m plunge at its start. There is also a gazebo nearby for viewing this part of the falls.
A miniature Victoria Falls roughly 20-30m tall and spanning a width of over 50m. The waterfall is one of several waterfalls on the Kalungwishi River. The other waterfalls include the Chimpempe Falls, Kabwelume Falls, and Kundabwika Falls
On the Ngona River in Luapula Province, the falls occur where the river splits into two channels to form two parallel waterfalls each about 10 m wide with a drop of about 30m, and separated by a distance of 50m. Ntumbachushi is notable for a series of smaller falls and pools stretching for a distance of more than 2km above the main falls, in a landscape described by many as among the most beautiful in central Africa.
Lower Zambezi National Park
The beauty of the park lies in it’s absolute wilderness state. The diversity of animals is not as wide as the other big parks, but the opportunities to get close to game wandering in and out of the Zambezi channels are spectacular. The rivers edge is overhung with a thick riverine fringe, mostly diasporus, ficus and other riverine species. Further inland is a floodplain fringed with mopane forest and interspersed with winterthorn trees Acacia albida. The hills which form the backdrop to the park are covered in broadleaf woodland.
South Luangwa National Park
One of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world with a concentration of game around the Luangwa river and it’s ox bow lagoons among the most intense in Africa.
North Luangwa National Park
A remote tract of land covering 4636 square kilometres that offers one of the finest wilderness experiences in Zambia, if not Africa itself. The beauty of visiting this park is the truly remarkable opportunities to experience Africa as it was. It is wild and untouched and you are simply an unobtrusive witness to its natural beauty and drama.
Zambia’s undiscovered Riveira! It offers spectacular views, stunning sunsets, great fishing, boating opportunities, water sports, wonderful relaxing holidays just soaking up the sunshine.
