Football in Zambia

In Zambia the sport football is run by the Football Association of Zambia. The association administers the national football team, as well as the Premier League. The side is nicknamed Chipolopolo (the Copper Bullets) as copper is one of the South Central African nation's main exports. The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is the governing body of football in Zambia, it was founded in 1929 and affiliated to FIFA in 1964. It is also a member of the Confederation of African Football and the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations. It organizes the Zambian Premier League and the national team. From the huge crowds in Zambia's stadiums to the ones in the bars in the city, you have got to give Zambian football the respect that all Zambians give it!

Football in Zambia

Football was first introduced in Livingstone, and now has become popular throughout the country, its even common to find streets empty and businesses at a standstill when an important match involving Zambia is being played. Everywhere you go in Zambia you'll see young boys kicking around a football. Sometimes the ball will be made of plastic bags with string wrapped around it, sometimes it will be made of crumpled up paper, as long as it can be kicked, there will be a game.

Zambia national football team

Zambia's national football team represents Zambia in association football and is governed by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ). During the 1980s, they were known as the KK 11, after founding President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda ("KK") who ruled Zambia from 1964 to 1991. After the country adopted multiparty politics, the side was nicknamed Chipolopolo. The team has three Africa Cup of Nations final appearances to its credit. They were once holders of the Africa Cup of Nations, winning in the 2012 final against Ivory Coast.

Zambia women's national football team

Zambia’s women’s national football team is called The She-polopolo. Women’s football in Zambia was formally organized by the Football Association of Zambia in 1983. Since then, Zambia has created a women’s senior national team and an under-20 team. Women’s football in Zambia continues to be supported by the national federation. Zambia has established a national women’s league along with regional and school competitions.

  • Lusaka Dynamos-Lusaka Dynamos Football Club is a Zambian football club based in Lusaka. They play in the top division in Zambian football. It is known for its ability to develop upcoming footballers into outstanding players.
  • Zesco United-Zesco United Football Club is a Zambian football club based in Ndola that plays in the Zambian Premier league. Founded on January 1, 1974, the club has spent most of their history in the top tier of Zambian football.
  • Forest Rangers-Forest Rangers Football Club started as a Community Football Team at Dola Hill Forest Station in Ndola in the year 1975 and joined the Ndola District Amateur League in 1976.
  • Zanaco-Zanaco Football Club is a Zambian football club based in Lusaka that plays in the MTN/FAZ Super Division. Zanaco Football Club was formed in 1978 as a social team by management trainees of Zambia National Commercial Bank.
  • Power Dynamos-Power Dynamos is a Zambian football club based in Kitwe that plays in the MTN/FAZ Super Division and is currently sponsored by Copperbelt Energy Corporation.
  • NAPSA Stars-NAPSA Stars is a Zambian football club based in Lusaka that plays in the MTN/FAZ Super Division. They play their home games at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka.

CAF Confederation Cup

The CAF Confederation Cup, officially named Total CAF Confederation Cup is an international club association football competition run by the Confederation of African Football. Selected club sides from Africa's football leagues are invited to participate in this competition, which is the second club football competition in the continent behind the CAF Champions League.
