Airtel also claims to have the best mobile network coverage in Zambia. MTN is the runner up and Zamtel is the smallest network in Zambia.

Zamtel, whose official name is Zambia Telecommunications Company Limited, is a government-owned telecommunication service provider in Zambia.

Gracing the 5G Demonstration in Lusaka, Minister of Science and Technology Felix Mutati said the launch of 5G puts Zambia among the first 10 African countries currently piloting it.

There are currently three national mobile operators in Zambia: MTN, Airtel and Zamtel. The 3 major networks operate on following frequencies: 2G/GSM up to EDGE on 900 MHz, 3G/UMTS up to DC-HSPA on 2100 MHz and 4G/LTE on 1800 MHz (B3) and 2600 MHz (B7).

Later in 1994 the first Internet service provider (ISP) in Zambia, ZAMNET, was established, which has since been the leading Internet Service Provider in Zambia. In 1995 ZAMTEL introduced cellu- lar telephony using Analogue Mobile Phone System (AMPS) technology.
