Wood Processing Supervisor

Main Job Purpose

The Sawmill Supervisor reports to the Operations and Workshop Manager, and is directly responsible to provide shift supervision, and coordination of maintenance activities as we transition from project construction into daily operation activities. This key role will assist with the efficient, safe wood processing, timber felling and timber processing and related scheduling logistics with the assigned workforce.

Training and Qualifications:

Pre-requisite: Technical diploma or related industry experience with 5 years practical experience.

Within 6 months: Company Policies and Procedures. Wood processing budgetary controls

Key Performance Areas (KPA)

1. Ensure application of highest Safety standards for sawmill and yard operations and chainsaw teams.

2. Oversee production unit by maximizing the use of materials, personnel and equipment to meet or exceed production goals, quality and financial performance (monitoring and cost reduction).

3. Supervise, direct and guide employees to help them achieve their maximum level of effectiveness; Identify and meet their needs for training in their job, health and safety and the environment.

4. Work with maintenance team to ensure optimal performance and efficiency of maintenance activities.

5. Ensure product quality meets customer requirements by performing the required inspections, and working with Quality

6. Control and Optimization to develop programs

7. Identify, recommend and / or implement changes to improve production procedures, equipment performance, working conditions and product quality in order to improve the efficiency of the sector

8. Ensure that all employees work in accordance with the rules, policies, programs and procedures of the Company, and with all applicable laws relating to health and safety.

9. Perform all administrative tasks (reports, production, maintenance, timesheets, health and safety, performance, training, transfer of personnel, environment, etc.)

KPA 1 : Ensure application of highest Safety standards for sawmill and yard operations and chainsaw teams

• Ensure compliance with all safety and health rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

• Ensure proper use of all required personal protective equipment.

• Identify and eliminate job hazards quickly through job safety analysis procedures.

• Train employees (new and experienced) in the safe and efficient methods of accomplishing each job or task as necessary.

• Review injury trends and establish prevention measures.

• Participate in incident investigations and inspections.

• 100% compliance with all safety and health rules, regulations, policies and procedures

• Provide all employees with protective clothing and ensure all use personal protective equipment

• 100% identification and elimination of job hazards

• Ensure quarterly training of direct reports

• Maintain 100% record of injury trends

• 100% investigations of all incidents and provide a thorough report within 24 hrs

KPA 2: Oversee production unit by maximizing the use of materials, personnel and equipment to meet or exceed production goals, quality and financial performance

• Ensure proper and effective utilisation of personnel, materials and equipment

• Adhere to budgetary provisions

• Ensure that the unit is adequately resourced

• Make the unit profitable

• 100% utilisation of personnel, materials and equipment

• Zero % avoidable machinery breakdowns

• Ensure appropriate staffing levels

• 100% tracking of the unit budget

• Ensure that the unit operates profitably

KPA 3: Supervise, direct and guide employees to help them achieve their maximum level of effectiveness; Identify and meet their needs for training in their job, health and safety and the environment

• Prepare an induction programme for all new employees

• Provide all employees with job descriptions

• Set performance targets for all employees in the Unit

• Ensure deliberate and focused on the job training

• Facilitate external training for employees where possible

• Robust induction programme in place for all new employees

• Unit and individual targets in place for all employees

• Annual on the job training programme in place

• External development programs in place and training institutions/individuals clearly identified

KPA 4: Work with maintenance team to ensure optimal performance and efficiency of maintenance activities.

• Prepare a weekly, monthly & annual maintenance schedule for all equipment

• Carry out daily check list on all equipment

• Regularly monitor the performance of the equipment

• Provide recommendations on the equipment to buy and dispose off

• 100% adherence to the maintenance schedule for all equipment

• 100% completion of the daily checklist on all equipment

• Provide bi annual recommendations of equipment to be bought

• Provide annual recommendations of equipment to dispose off

KPA 5: Ensure product quality meets customer requirements by performing the required inspections, and working with Quality

• Ensure the product meets the company standards

• Ensure that the product meets the customer satisfaction

• Closely follow the set production guidelines for quality

• All products processed according to set standards

KPA 6: Control and Optimization to develop programs

• Take full control of processing and development programs

• Optimum utilisation of resources/materials

• Regularly review the production process

• Production processes regularly reviewed

KPA 7: Identify, recommend and / or implement changes to improve production procedures, equipment performance, working conditions and product quality in order to improve the efficiency of the sector

• Carry out o holistic review of the production chain

• Review the working conditions and product quality

• Under take product survey in the similar sector with a view to making recommendations for improvement where necessary.

KPA 8: Ensure that all employees work in accordance with the rules, policies, programs and procedures of the Company, and with all applicable laws relating to health and safety.

• Regularly inform employees on any changes in Company rules, policies and procedures

• Explain changes in legislation

• Hold interactive meetings with employees on a regular basis

• Prepare time sheets and submit them to Human Resource for processing.
