Temporary Research Associate, Negotiation Skills for Secondary School Girls

IPA-Zambia seeks qualified applicants for a Research Associate position starting as soon as possible (or 3 September 2018) or a study on the long-term effects of negotiation skills for secondary school girls in Lusaka, Zambia.The position offers an opportunity to gain first-hand field management experience in an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research.

The Research Associate will manage the follow-up survey to the original Girls Negotiation studythat began in 2013. The fieldwork is ongoing and the field team is tasked with tracking and carrying out a short survey with the remaining girls in a sample of 2,366 participants from the original study.

These girls have now left school and our goal is to track all of them, (1) collecting contact details for a future endline study and (2) following-up on their intermediate outcomes to investigate the impact of negotiation skills on outcomes such as secondary school completion, university enrollment, employment status, etc.

The Research Associate will work closely with the principal investigators, partners and other IPA country staff (field manager, research manager) to coordinate fieldwork and conduct constant monitoring and evaluation of the study. The position offers the change to gain first-hand field management experience in a project that is rolling, in an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research.

The work will stretch your skills in problem-solving and management, being dynamic and creative in employing new strategies to find difficult-to-reach girls and will require your full commitment.

The position will be based in Lusaka and the period of employment is conditional on funding.


  • Manage and survey teams to conduct data collection.
  • Ensure all data quality protocols are followed including auditing enumerators and performing daily checks of the incoming data; correcting the errors of staff iteratively to ensure the data is of the highest quality.
  • Manage the budget, including tracking all expenses to ensure costs are within project funds.
  • Manage data, from collection to delivery of a final, cleaned dataset.
  • Produce regular, timely progress reports.
  • Coordinate with partners to ensure interests are aligned and accounted for, and participate in and present the study at meetings with key stakeholders.
  • Report issues arising in the field to researchers and line manager.
  • Maintain compliance with company policy and procedures.


  • A Bachelor's or Master’s degree in economics, public policy, international development, education or related fields.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills; meticulous attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prior work experience with adolescent girls (desired).
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices
  • Strong quantitative skills and very good knowledge of Stata required; programming and other technical knowledge a strong plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead staff efficiently to achieve project goals.
  • Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently and a team player.
  • Experience working or living in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Familiarity with quantitative research methods, particularly randomized controlled trials.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude
  • We are looking for a commitment period of 2-6 months, beginning as soon as possible.
