Field Coordinator -Veterinary Officer

  • The Field Coordinator will lead and facilitate the well-being of all animals through the adoption of improved animal management, production practices and standards in all project areas to ensure that animal health, animal husbandry and product quality assurance is achieved.
  • The Coordinator will also ensure that all project participants have the knowledge and skills to humanely maximize their animals’ productivity and reduce the cost of production to the lowest level possible and will work in close collaboration and coordination with field staff to ensure the successful, innovative, efficient and effective functioning of all enterprise hubs in the project area.
  • He/she shall also support and deputize the Project Manager on day-to-day activities and lead the technical team in diagnosing and treatment of diseases and dysfunctions of animals.

Responsibilities and Deliverables

  • Provide capacity building (30%)
  • Upgrade animal husbandry skills of staff, local service providers, Community-Based Animal Health Workers, and farmers in the operational areas
  • Train CAVEs and farmers on improved animal husbandry
  • Train CAVEs and farmers on community disease prevention and control
  • Assist in the selection of high-quality animals
  • Inspect livestock health and plan for vaccination and prophylaxis
  • Facilitate the training, coaching, follow-up, and capacity of CAVEs


  • Training materials and curriculum are designed on animal health, animal husbandry and other related issues at project onset and periodically reviewed
  • Improved animal health and husbandry through trained Community Agrovet Entrepreneurs (CAVEs)
  • Follow-up and backstopping services provided to trained farmers, CAVEs, partners and project staff to ensure good quality delivery
  • CAVEs and technical experts are mobilized and capacitated as appropriate for improved livestock management practices

Support and provide oversight on the establishment of livestock producer hubs/veterinary care and breeding service entrepreneurship (50%)

  • Coordinate the supply of quality veterinary services, equipment, vaccines and medicines through the hubs as appropriate
  • Coordinate and build up linkages and networks with the appropriate government, cooperative offices, and other organizations
  • Monitor, support and backstop the cooperatives/associations for effective functioning
  • Build and strengthen group organizational capacity
  • Facilitate leadership training and linkages with support institutions
  • Facilitate the creation of business plans and livestock value chain analyses
  • Set up a database for livestock productivity in any given animal enterprise


  • Placement of high-quality and disease-free livestock with communities is effectively coordinated
  • Documented changes in feeding or health regimes and any other management practices are shared quarterly
  • Coordinate private sector engagement in the provision of animal health care services
  • Continuous adoption, documentation, and sharing of improved fodder and pasture production best practices
  • Strengthened entrepreneurial capacities among hub members

Environmental Protection and Management (10%)

  • Facilitate and develop strategies that will ensure environmental safety (protection/preservation and conservation), and infrastructure establishment suitable for both animal well-being and the eco-system


  • Implemented reforestation programs to replenish the environment
  • Constructed environmentally-friendly livestock houses
  • Climate-smart livestock management techniques are promoted
  • Appropriate waste management practices are adopted
  • Measures that will ensure sustainable pasture availability (year-round, quality and quantity) and management are facilitated

Monitoring and Evaluation (10%)

  • Ensure that planning, effective implementation, monitoring, learning and project evaluation is executed according to the project plan and donor requirements
  • Collect data and maintain a good recording system on the performance of livestock value chains for inclusion in reports and databases
  • Document lessons learned, best practices and success stories
  • Conduct field visits


  • Lessons learned and best practices are incorporated in the value chains
  • Promoted community-led ME&L systems in collaboration with Project Management Committees
  • Database of livestock herds established

May perform other job-related duties as assigned

  • Required Experience

Minimum Requirements

  • Diploma in Animal Health or Agriculture Science with 7 years’ experience
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Health or Agriculture Science from any recognized institution
  • Experience in Community Development work

Preferred Requirements

  • A Degree in Veterinary Medicine
  • At least 5 years’ field experience in Veterinary Medicine
  • At least 3 years’ experience in participatory methodology/approaches and community mobilization

Most Critical Proficiency

  • Good analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A good understanding and sensitivity to issues associated with poverty, hunger and environment, livestock marketing, and knowledge of the context to which non-profit organizations operate
  • Proficient in MS word processing, spreadsheets, presentation tools, electronic mail software
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated written and oral fluency in English and Bemba
