Post-Doctoral Fellow (Value Chains and Gender)

The Post-Doctoral Fellow play a key research and enabling role in two applied research projects in Zambia:

Piloting inclusive business and entrepreneurial models for smallholder fish farmers and poor value chain actors in Zambia and Malawi and,

Aquaculture Technical, Vocational, and Entrepreneurship Training (TEVET) to Improved Private Sector and Smallholder Skills.

The Post-Doctoral Fellow will be specifically responsible for designing and implementing the value chain, gender and markets research, including ensuring effective gender integration and leading the development of high quality science outputs (e.g., briefs, blogposts, and journal articles).

The post holder will be working with the CIM Aquaculture Expert and team members to pilot and scale the gender-inclusive and pro-poor business and entrepreneurship models (IBEMs), set up the innovation platforms, and carry out the project monitoring and evaluation according to the results framework. The role will also manage the day-to-day operations of the project and ensure the links between the Zambia and Malawi components are fluid.

On another project, the Post-Doctoral Fellow will be responsible for effective gender and youth integration throughout the multiple dimensions of the project, including in the innovations in the TEVET skills development and smallholder fish farmer-private sector linkages. This will also involve working closely with the project team and partners and designing and drawing on M&E and research within the project to generate high quality, empirically-based insights and outputs regarding inclusive aquaculture sector development.

Both projects are being carried out in Northern and Luapula Provinces and the Post-Doctoral Fellow will be required to travel to these provinces regularly (monthly) to implement research activities with partners.

The Post-Doctoral Fellow’s key responsibilities will include, but not limited to the following:

  • Consolidating critical current knowledge from the literature and other WorldFish projects on gender and youth inclusive, pro-poor aquaculture business models to inform the projects and produce science outputs.
  • Develop and lead the implementation and analysis of data from a bespoke set of qualitative and quantitative monitoring and evaluation (M&E) tools to assess social, gender and youth dimensions of the project, including women’s empowerment.
  • Designing, implementing, and analyzing data from select studies within the two projects, such as research regarding IBEMs and Innovation Platforms. This includes ensuring that these are effectively gender-integrated.
  • Generate empirical insights into the feasibility and inclusivity and other outcomes of select gender and pro-poor business models and communicate these in high quality science publications, including both gender integrated and gender strategic articles.
  • Analysis will be carried out in collaboration with scientists, fish farmers, private sector and other actors.
  • Manage the day-today operations of the project including close engagement with partners, and coordinate and produce project reports as needed.
  • Contribute to enhancing the value chain and gender research and innovation capacities of staff on both projects, including through supporting integration, coaching and training.


This job might be for you if you have these essential skills and qualifications:

  • A completed PhD in Social Sciences; Economics, Value Chains, Market Systems, Development Studies, Gender, Social Anthropology, Rural Sociology or similar; with relevant experience in rural development in developing countries.
  • Strong conceptual and empirical understanding of gender relations and social inequality, with specific expertise in gender, development, rural development studies, economics, economic anthropology, rural sociology, or related fields.
  • Experience in successfully integrating a gender, social inclusion, or pro-poor lens in applied agricultural research.
  • Demonstrated high level competence in qualitative methods design, data collection and analysis, including working in rural, low-income country contexts.
  • Strong background in use quantitative research methods.
  • Excellent academic writing skills (English), evidenced by a growing a peer-reviewed publications track record. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, and the ability to present coherent and convincing strategic analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to lead and work in multi-cultural teams as well as develop a close and effective working relationship with partners.
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary and culturally-diverse teams and being able to recognize and react accordingly to work issues related to/arising from cultural and social contexts.
  • Able to travel extensively and work in remote areas under difficult conditions.
  • Demonstrated quality of judgment and the ability to think strategically, assessing and responding to new challenges in rural development.
  • Proficiency in the use of quantitative software such as SPSS or Stata and use of qualitative software such as NVivo.
  • Expertise in inclusive value chains and markets innovations and/or analysis.
