The Road Development Agency is a statutory organization whose function is to plan, manage and coordinate the road network in the country. The Agency is responsible for planning, care, maintenance and construction of public roads in Zambia. It also regulates the maximum permissible weights on roads, conducts studies for the development, maintenance and improvement of the road network, and reviews design standards and classification.

In order to implement this mandate, the Road Development Agency now wishes to fill up the vacant position as follows:


RDA would like to recruit an Environmentalist who will be responsible for the integration of environmental issues into the care, maintenance and construction of the country’s road network in accordance with the country’s policies and regulations and best practices.


  • The Environmentalist will be required to undertake the following duties:
  • Provide overall policy and technical guidance and direction for environmental issues, as defined by the country’s environmental laws and regulations and international best practices
  • Coordinate the timely preparation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (ElAs), Resettlement Action Plans (RAPS) and other related environmental reports that are vital for the successful integration of environmental issues in the road sector
  • Undertake compliance monitoring activities to ensure that Contractors and Consultants are abiding by the provisions of the contracts and environmental reports
  • Liaise closely with other Road Development Agency Departments and other relevant stakeholders such as the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) during project preparation and implementation
  • Attend other duties as may be assigned from time to time.


  • This is a permanent and pensionable position.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Full Grade 12 School Certificate
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences such as Geography, Biology, Natural Resources Management from a reputable training institution.
  • A minimum of five years’ work experience in environmental management,
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Proven strong writing and analytical skills
  • Ability to communicate in at least one of the local languages
  • Familiarity with the relevant Government procedures and regulations.
  • Good computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint email and the internet.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
