Cooperative Advisor

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is the implementing agency of the Federal Republic of Germany for technical and international cooperation. It offers flexible, sustainable and effective solutions in political, economic and social change processes. Most of the work of GIZ is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). GIZ also operates on behalf of other German ministries as well as public and private bodies in Germany and abroad. These include the European Commission, the United Nations, the World Bank and governments of other countries.

Under the Green Innovation Centres for the Agriculture and Food Sector (GIC) Project in Zambia, GIZ provides support to the groundnut and soya bean value chains in the Eastern Province. The activities are implemented in close collaboration with COMACO and predominantly related to the following key areas of capacity development: sustainable agricultural practices, seed production and the protection of natural resources. By improving farmers’ skills and knowledge, the project aims to improve productivity and income levels as well as to prepare farmers to better cope with external threats such as climate change. Increasing importance is given to cooperatives as central element for structural change in the area. Cooperatives are supported in improving service delivery to their members and act as a channel to high value markets. The success of the cooperatives is based on the principles of good governance and responsible leadership as well as on the implementation of viable business models. The project supports cooperatives in their development process through training and coaching.

In this context, the project seeking a suitable candidate for the following position:

Cooperative Advisor (based in Chipata)


Main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Engagement with cooperatives
  • Designing, setting up and maintaining an effective partnership with selected cooperatives that is based on accountability, commitment and achievements

Capacity development of cooperatives:

  • Providing demand-driven training and coaching to selected cooperatives in areas such as governance, management and enterprise development
  • Supporting cooperatives in developing and delivering services for members and membership mobilisation
  • Keeping track of and following up on progress made and suggesting redirective actions in the implementation approach if required (in close collaboration with the project coordinator)
  • Introducing/strengthening process improvements using digital solutions
  • Strengthening capacities of the implementing partner in respect to cooperative development

Collaboration with stakeholders:

  • Setting up and facilitating a dialogue platform for cooperatives to exchange experience and shared lessons learnt
  • Engaging the Ministry of Commerce and Industries wherever needed
  • Liaising closely with our implementing partner and other stakeholders and exchanging experiences and lessons learnt
  • Collaborating with external service providers engaged by the project

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Management or a related field; a master’s degree is an advantage
  • Certification in cooperative development

Professional experience:

  • At least 3-5 years’ professional experience in cooperative development
  • At least 3 years’ experience in business development of rural enterprises
  • Other knowledge, additional competences:
  • Excellent knowledge in business administration and management
  • Experience in business model analysis
  • Experience with approaches for empowering youth and women
  • Excellent didactic and instructional skills and knowledge on adult learning concepts including coaching
  • Excellent networking skills, communication and writing skills
  • Good organisational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and must be be a very good team player
  • Very good working knowledge of ICT technologies and computer applications (e.g. MS Office Suite, etc.)
  • Good understanding of the Government’s structures
  • Fluency in English and Tonga
