Barrack Lumwana Mining Company Ltd (LMC), a copper mining company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the North Western region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km south west of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Geology Superintendent:
Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, you will be responsible for the safe, timely and cost-efficient provision of Mine Geological services (Grade Control, infill drilling, near mine exploration, geological logging and assaying, ore body modelling, resource estimation and reporting, ore block design, dilution control, crusher feed and metal reconciliation).
This includes the design and supervision of all Mine-site drilling activities, the timely creation of Resource and Grade Control models, and ensuring the Mineral Resource is optimally extracted for contained metal and profitability.
Your duties will include but not limited to the following:
Ensure MINEX programs are designed in advance that actively exploit potential targets on Large Mine Leases (LML’s).
Interact with the Departments responsible for the preparation of sites for drilling activities to ensure they are done to design, schedule and cost targets.
Periodically report (internally and externally) MINEX activities with materiality and transparency by due dates.
Assess and prioritise MINEX projects (infill and exploration) by sites and regions according to their potential and impact on the Lumwana’s Life-of-Mine (LOM).
Plan and implement Grade Control drilling programmes in order to optimise timely exploitation of the Resource.
Ensure that Geological data is being managed, appropriately stored and correctly utilized in Acquire and Vulcan.
Resource models are created to meet the needs of the Operation, and that they meet appropriate International standards
Produce Grade Control models that meet the requirements of the operation for timely extraction according to mine plans.
Accurately maintain a diamond core library of the defined Ore Reserve, and maintain accurate records of the QA/QC of all sample data for Sarbanes Oxley legislation compliance.
Ensure that geological mapping is up to date in all active mining areas.
Ensure production geology activities are undertaken to support the mining operation, including appropriate measures to reduce ore loss and dilution.
Ensure development and implementation of appropriate stockpile management and ore feed plans and schedules in collaboration with Mine Planning to ensure the optimum development and reconciliation of the Resource.
Undertake regular reconciliation between the resource model, the grade control model, the ore blocks and declared ore mined and ensure that variances remain within accepted industry standards.
Prepare and tabulate Resource Statements and ensure Resource Models are available and suitable for preparation of Reserve estimates
Manage and control Geological Department expenditure and carry out periodic and as-needed cost reviews.
Actively participate with Lumwana Leadership Team to ensure that the targets for Resource exploitation, Capital Management, cost control, safety performance, Employee development, Environmental management and Corporate governance are achieved.
Actively participate in all appropriate industry committees, government working parties and community groups to ensure the company interests are represented and protected
Ensure processes and systems are implemented and maintained to deliver budget/forecast tonnes, grade and effectively limits deleterious materials (talc, uranium, insolubles) to maximise copper recovery, mill efficiency and produce on-spec concentrate.
Inducting new team members regarding all relevant MOS (Management Operating System) requirements.
Taking immediate action on non-conformances and improvement opportunities regarding all relevant MOS requirements .
Experience & Qualifications
Bachelor of Science – majoring in Geology
Master of Science in Geology or additional Mining qualification (desirable)
Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia (desirable)
10 years experience in geological industry of which 5 years should be at an operationalmanagement level
Experience in large multi pit operations utilising large scale mining equipment.
Be physically fit and be able to pass a pre-employment medical examination.
Good computer skills with the ability to use integrated management systems, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet applications. Able to exhibit proficiency in standard mining software ie Vulcan, Datamine or Micromine.
Database applications ie AcQuire, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Office Suite.
Must have a Valid driver’s licence
