What is farming produce?

This is the output from agricultural activity, also referred to as agricultural produce, agro products or agro produce. In Zambia, farming produce, from plants, animals and microorganisms, includes agricultural crops, livestock and livestock products - cattle and poultry, meat and chicken - dairy products, fish, and forestry products such as honey and timber.

Farming produce can be divided into two main categories:

  • Output from crops and other plants: These include vegetables, fruits, edible oils, essential oils, sugar, beverages and juice, seeds, flowers, fodders and herbal products.
  • Output from animals: Dairy products (milk, cheese, ice cream, butter); poultry products (chicken and eggs); fish, fish oils etc.; and beef, mutton, bacon, pork etc.

The business aspect

The trading of farming produce, whether locally or internationally, creates business opportunities and investment opportunities for farmers, commodity buyers, and retail and wholesale outlets. Farming produce also becomes the raw material for agricultural industries and agro-allied industries.
