The students of the International School of Lusaka recently had the opportunity to help Recyclocraftz, a project that supports the vocational training of impoverished, unemployed and/or widowed women. The women get taught how to make items using recycled materials from the everyday life. The items get sold and the artisans raise money and empower themselves. Items for sale are bags, purses, children’s clothing, jewellery, bowls and trivets.
Year 6 collected clothes, magazines, cardboard, plastic bags and cutoffs and went to Recyclocraftz to deliver bags and bags full of them. In turn, they got to see how the women worked and what things can be made using everyday resources.
The visit coincided very well with their PYP Exhibition which is about the clothing industry and its effects on society.
Overall it was a very humbling experience for the students.
