One of the first applicants to receive a grant from the Zambia Business Growth Fund was Kiecan Farms, owned by business-woman Chilufya Noble. Kiecan Farms is a hospitality sector specialist vegetable producer/aggregator; growing their own vegetables and training, supporting and providing the logistics to link small scale producers with hotels in and around Lusaka.
Having run lodges in the capital, Chilufya understands the demands of this specific market segment. The Kiecan Farms proposal to the Growth Fund set out a viable business model and a convincing plan to manage planting, cultivation and aggregation in a way that would deliver a reliable, quality supply of high-value vegetables.
Progress with project implementation is already being made. The fields earmarked have been cleared and drip irrigation systems installed, ready for the planting season. This time next year should see Kiecan Farms in full production, employing people on the farm as well as giving a market to local smallholder farmers who will supply Kiecan through the outgrower scheme.
