5th DII International Conference on Infrastructure Development and Investment Strategies for Africa

Tomorrow Investments Founder and Chief Executive Chanda Katotobwe has called on the Academia to develop a scientific model that will prescribe how local contractors in the construction sector can grow.

Speaking when he made a presentation at the 5th DII International Conference on Infrastructure Development and Investment Strategies for Africa which was hosted in Livingstone from the 11th to the 13th of July, 2018, Mr. Katotobwe challenged the academia to establish why the nation still has no local contractors competing with foreign contractors 54 years after Independence.

Mr. Katotobwe who established the wholly owned Zambian construction firm in 1989 stressed that sustainable infrastructure development can not be achieved without the full participation of the locals.

“We have Engineers being trained in our universities and graduating every year yet the capacity of local contractors is not growing, there’s need to address this reality on the ground if we are to achieve sustainable development in this sector,” Mr. Katotobwe said.

He emphasised that locally trained Engineers have the technical capacity to participate in the sector and as such opportunities should be deliberately created for them to drive the development of infrastructure in the nation.

This annual Conference is organised by The University of Zambia, The Copperbelt University, The University of Johannesburg and the National Council for Construction. It drew participation from across Africa and beyond.
