(Lusaka, 21 st June, 2019) - Texila American University (TAU) celebrated World Yoga Day in conjunction with India’s High Commission to Zambia. Speaking at the TAU Annex Campus in Lusaka, Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Ajay Kumar Poddar called on citizens to incorporate yoga into their lives in order to be beneficiaries of its health enhancement properties. Professor Poddar said yoga has been scientifically proven to enhance health, increase strength and flexibility and reduce stress symptoms.
“Take some time and research on it and hopefully join the millions of people around the world in making it a part of your lifestyle. The health benefits of yoga are immense and can surely not be ignored. Multiple studies have confirmed the many mental and physical benefits of yoga. Finding the time to practice yoga just a few times per week may be enough to make a noticeable difference when it comes to your health”, he said.
Speaking in the keynote address, India’s High Commission to Zambia Counsellor Mr Sanjay Verma called on participants to take responsibility for their mental and physical well-being. He added that part of that requires taking care of one’s own body in addition to taking care of the environment. He bemoaned the deterioration of the environment with pollution and general lack of cleanliness around the world. He said Zambia was fortunate to have fresh air and encouraged citizens to preserve that. He said this with regard to the 2019 Yoga Day theme “Climate Action”.
Also speaking at the same event, Yoga Drill expert Guru Dr. Sharanya D- Naturopathic and Life Style Consultant, stressed the need to prioritize one’s health. She added that yoga is beneficial especially in the fast paced lifestyles that cause stress.
For the last five years, Yoga Day is celebrated annually on June 21st to raise global awareness about the ancient Indian practice.
