A guide to looking after your eyes

Your eyes are affected by your lifestyle and health conditions. Phil Optician’s useful, easy to follow advice will help you to protect your vision and keep your eyes healthy for longer.

Follow these 7 simple steps for maintaining healthy eyes:

1. Eat right to protect your sight

Eat lots of Fruits and Vegetables which contain Vitamin A, C and E.

  • Vitamin A - Adequate dietary intake of Vitamin A makes the surface of the eyes, skin and mucous membranes tough so that the harmful microorganisms, such as viruses and bacteria is prevented and the risk of eye infections are cut down
  • Vitamin C - vitamin C may reduce the risk of forming a cataract and vision loss from macular degeneration.
  • Vitamin E - a powerful antioxidant that holds the membranes of the cells present in our eyes and help fight against the potent eye impairment disorders.

2. Wear protective eye wear

Wear protective eye wear when playing sports or doing activities around the home. Protective eye wear includes safety glasses and goggles, safety shields, and eye guards specially designed to provide the correct protection for activities like use of chemicals and power tools.

3. Be cool and wear your shades

Wear sunglasses if you’re in the sun. They protect you from glare and from harmful ultraviolet light, which can cause cataracts.

4. Don’t get too close

While watching TV, keep a distance of 8 - 10 Feet between your eyes and the screen. And remember to take breaks from staring at that screen.

5. Give your eyes a rest

While working on computers or watching TV do 20-20-20 exercises for your eyes. The 20-20-20 rule is - every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you, for 20 seconds. This will keep your eyes moist and healthy and can help reduce eyestrain.

6. Have a comprehensive dilated eye exam

Visit your optician and have regular eye exams. Those wearing contact lenses and glasses must be take tests at least every 12 months.

7. Examine your eyes for signs of damage or disease

Adults and children with diabetes are advised to be tested every six months to help prevent Diabetes related blindness.
